Jesus Is the Rock

At the end of forty years in the wilderness, a new generation of Israel repeats the sins of their fathers, grumbling against Moses and Aaron over a lack of water. Pastor Chris Gordon asks a question many readers have struggled with: why would God bar Moses, after a lifetime of faithful leadership, from bringing the people into the land? Rather than settling for the common answer that Moses sinned merely by striking the rock, this sermon traces the story back to Numbers 17, where God gave Aaron's budding staff as a sign for the rebels, a merciful provision meant to end their grumbling and spare them from judgment.

When the people complained at Meribah, God told Moses to take that staff and speak about the rock. Instead, a weary and angry Moses called the people rebels and struck the rock twice, ministering only the condemning power of the law. The sermon applies this to church leadership and to our homes, marriages, and families, where frustration so easily turns to anger. It closes by pointing to the bronze serpent of Numbers 21 and to Jesus, the true Rock, Rod, and Deliverer, who gives living water that satisfies the soul and replaces complaining with thanksgiving.
